Why is Tech in Such a Rush?

Life started off fairly simply for me and it was similar for most persons born in the early 80's. We played with friends and family, ran in the sun, or rain or snow depending on where you lived, and you watched tv on the big boxes that no longer exist today.

Yup, it was all simple. There was one phone in the home, and everyone had to call it to get to you, or to the neighbour's house. The only technology we knew was the television and the home phone.

In the early nineties, there were cordless home phones, and then the introduction of giant cell phones greeted us. I still remember the day my brother brought home the Nokia 6110, that after my father had put one of those giant Motorolas to rest.. It was indeed the best thing ever. The cell phone went on a diet, shrinking from the dinosaur my father had brought home, and grew some brains while he was at it. I was in love.

In my early years, I had a thing for short tech relationships. I would often lose my phones in cars, buses and the like, and I would not even notice my loss until sometimes hours after. I would simply sigh and move on to the next one that was given to me (I never bought phones).

Fast forward to the early to mid 2000's, it's the time of the Blackberry and they are ruling supreme. Head on forward to the late 2000's, and phones have become even smarter. We have the iphone, followed by Android, and now a myriad of other devices that all fight for our attention.

As I sit in front of my desktop and pen these words, we are in the middle of CES 2013 and technology seems to be moving at an ever increasing speed. TV's have gone from curved to flat, to curved again, phone sizes remind me of the first Motorola my father brought home. I no longer end the relationships with my tech pieces, but instead, I am left behind. The industry has left me behind. By the time I get home with my shiny new gadget, there is something better and even shinier being displayed.

Some might argue that I just need to be content, but I ask the question, why are we in such a rush? Better yet, why is tech in such a rush? I wish I could get an answer to my question.

  1. I grew up in the 70's and 80's in rural Arkansas. I remember the first time I watched a VCR tape, my mom rented the video player along with the movie.
We had a big black rotary dial phone on the wall that belonged to the phone company.
Now both Mom and Dad carry cell phones, but I do not. My husband has one that he makes me take when I am traveling an hour or more away from home.
I have a laptop computer from 2010, but that's about it for my techy stuff. I am very much old-school, and really dislike cell phones in general and texting in particular. I have no clue what 4G or 3G means and have no desire to learn.
By the way, what is that hand holding in the photo above?

  2. Oh my. @Dyanna. Why don't you like cellphones? They're great for keeping in contact with your husband and family in general. I totally understand your dislike for some things though. The tech changes so rapidly that it's hard to keep up with.

Kudos to your husband for making you use that cell, and that hand above is holding a very small but powerful computer. That's right, they're shrinking in size.

  3. I agree that cell phones are great for keeping in contact. I don't mind having one around in case of an emergency. I'm just sick of seeing and hearing people with them everywhere I go.

Folks seem to be addicted to texting, talking, gaming, or twiddling with their phones and other electronic devices at all hours and in all places. Drives me crazy! Common courtesy has been tossed aside in favor of self-absorbed busyness.

Of course that's just my opinion. So, it's not really the technology I dislike, rather the way our general society uses it.

    1. Ahh, I totally understand. Yes, it has become a bit of an obsession among young and middle aged persons and it can be quite engaging whether you're a part of it or not. Someone around you always has something to say about this piece of tech or that.

I think you just gave me one of my topics Dyanna.
